Icelandic Weather & Road Network Explorer
I have been archiving weather station and road network status reports for a few years, primarily using open government data sources from the Icelandic Road Administration and the Icelandic Meteorological Office. Downtime during the winter storms in late 2022 finally gave me the opportunity to tinker with visualising this data in a meaningful way.
🌤️ Weather patterns
This graph shows the range of values reported across all Icelandic weather stations over time. Darker colors indicate a larger number of stations reporting the same value, lighter colors are "outliers".
Weather station data is polled from an archive of over 200 stations. This data is then summarized into "bins" both across time and reported values to be displayed. For example, a bin may represent a range of 2°C to 3°C on a given day, so one weather station reporting 2.3°C at 9am on this day and another one measuring 2.9°C on the same day but in the afternoon would both contribute to this bin. If the bin size were changed to 0.5°C, or to 6-hour periods instead of 24 hours, the contributions would go to separate bins. You can change the bin size in the .
All values are stored exactly as reported by the weather stations and therefore may contain individual measurement errors, which show up as outliers far from the main trends in these graphs.
🚙 Road Surface Conditions
The chart below tracks the state of the road network (share of roads being open, closed, or reporting various surface conditions) in recent history. The vertical stacking is in order from easily passable on the top (green) over gradually more difficult driving conditions with closed / impassable roads (red) and roads not in service (black) at the bottom. The horizontal scale of this chart is synchronised with the weather chart above.
Looking for trends on a particular road section? Look it up here!
Color codes mostly corresponds to the classification used by the Icelandic Road Administration, except for Mountain Vehicles Only, which does not have a specific color code in the official classification but is shown differently in the maps altogether. Roads that were reported with an "unknown" classification were omitted from the graph.
Road surface conditions are currently not filtered by region but always show data across the entire country.
Remarks
These graphs are intended solely to illustrate general trends and road conditions in Iceland and should not be used to judge current conditions or plan travels in more detail. While I do my best to ensure data integrity, my archives may be incomplete or include processing errors. Always refer to official sources for up-to-date information.
Both the weather and road surface data may include outliers due to sensor error or intermittent transmissions (typical signs are weather stations reporting -40°C or singular data points of massive wind gusts). I do not perform any data processing on these data but store it "as is". When querying weather data for time periods (more than 30 days), the return data is reduced by averaging 2 or more consecutive measurements to keep download sizes and bandwidth requirements at a reasonable level.
The archive currently includes approximately 31.700.000 weather station records, and about 1.200.000 road section status reports. Data is polled at 15-minute intervals and stored in a MariaDB database. If you are interested in accessing the archival record, please drop me a line. If there is sufficient interest I will look into building a suitable API for more general access.
